Embracing Dementia: Ethical Considerations in End-of-Life

Dementia is a broad disease with many sub-categories that is often misunderstood, even in the medical community. Different forms of dementia present differently and can progress at different rates. Understanding disease progression and managing difficult situation is a skill that is needed more than ever. Having knowledge about dementia is crucial for fiduciaries, given the obligation to make very challenging decisions on behalf of the person with dementia, while also considering the family dynamics. As the disease progresses, there are many ethical dilemmas that arise, requiring a special skillset to make decisions in the best interest of the ward.
